This is a summer training guide designed for high school cross country runners to assist them in their off-season (summer) training. It can actually be adapted to any time of the year for off-season training, but the focus is for runners of all levels as they prepare over the summer for their upcoming cross country season. It was developed over the 24 year career by Dr. Mike Collins, the head coach at Lewis-Clark State College. In that period of time his program and athletes produced over 270 All-Americans, 20 cross country conference titles, six national champions and three Olympic Trials Qualifiers including the #4 ALL-TIME for the UK in the 10k, Sam Atkin, who uses a variation of this training for his own pre-season. The guide includes information about stretching, weight training, nutrition in addition to the 10-week training guidelines. It has been developed to meet the needs of a beginner runner as well as the more advanced of all levels of mileage. Coach Collins has a Master's degree in exercise physiology and a Ph.D. in sport science and he as applied that education into developing one of the best collegiate programs in the country and the start of their success is with their summer training.
